The Stages of Competition
The Mrs. Alaska United States competition is designed after the national model, which includes 4 stages of competition: Private Judge's Interview, On-Stage Question in a red cocktail dress, Swim Wear, and Evening Gown.
|
Private Judge's Interview
25% of the overall score is the Private Judge's Interview. This stage of the competition is held prior to the stage
competition and is an opportunity for the judges to ask questions of the contestants. These questions could
include political issues, personal opinions, or questions about information the contestant provide on their
Judge's Biography. Judges are instructed to score according to the quality of answers, the confidence and
articulation of the delivery, and the overall appearance of the interviewee. The interview lasts 4 minutes and is
panel-styled, with the contestants sitting in front of all 5 judges at once. This style of interview is called "panel" or
"press conference". A professional skirt-suit is recommended.
On-Stage Question
Another 25% of the overall score is the On-Stage Question. This portion of the competition judges the contestants' ability to
be comfortable and natural in front of a live audience. The questions are asked 2 questions by the emcee, one which is
generally based on information provided in the Initial Application or Judge's Biography and one that is completely random.
Contestants do not know the nature of the questions before they are asked. A knee-length or T-length red cocktail dress is
required
Example questions: "What is your favorite pastime?" "Why did you give up your morning mochas?" "Who is your greatest
hero and why?" "What lifelong goal did you recently accomplish?"

Swim Wear
A very significant portion of the competition is the Swim Wear, which makes up 25% of the overall score. This element
judges the contestants on their overall fitness and confidence. A one-piece swim suit of the contestant's choice (recommended
with high heel shoes) is worn by each contestant. A swimsuit wrap is optional.
The overall title holder, who competes for Mrs. United States, will wear a one or two piece of their choice at the national Mrs.
United States pageant.

Evening Gown
The final 25% of the competition is the Evening Gown. This portion of the competition highlights the contestants
in their most elegant attire. Husbands, or an escort of the contestant's choosing, will bring the contestants in
and out of the stage for their solo walk. Contestants are judged on their grace and personality displayed on
stage.
After a brief intermission, contestants will receive the awards in their evening gowns. A full length formal gown is
required.
